Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed (recommend Pepperidge Farm)
  • 12 cocktail sausages or mini hot dogs (look for uncured, nitrate-free options)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon everything bagel seasoning (optional but recommended)
  • Mustard or ketchup, for the eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, unfold your thawed puff pastry sheet. Use a rolling pin to gently roll it out to about a 12×12-inch square, if it isn’t already.
  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into 12 long strips, about 1/2 inch wide. These will be your ‘bandages.’
  4. Take one sausage and wrap a pastry strip around it, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Leave a small gap near the top for the ‘face’ — about 1/4 inch of the sausage should be visible. Repeat with all 12 sausages.
  5. Place the wrapped sausages seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  6. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Using your pastry brush, gently brush the tops of each mummy with the egg wash.
  7. If using everything bagel seasoning, sprinkle a pinch over each mummy.
  8. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the mummies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  10. Using a squeeze bottle or a toothpick, dot two tiny eyes on each mummy with mustard or ketchup.
  11. Serve immediately.

Notes

Keep the pastry cold for best puffing results. Don’t overwrap the sausages — 2-3 wraps is plenty. Seal the seam by tucking the end underneath. Space mummies at least 1 inch apart on the baking sheet. Start checking at 12 minutes as ovens vary. For make-ahead, assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate, then brush with egg wash and bake just before serving. For freezing, assemble and freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag; bake from frozen at 400°F for 15-18 minutes.
