This cozy slow cooker mulled wine with orange and cloves is a warm, spiced drink that fills your home with holiday aromas. It’s easy to make with simple ingredients and perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot, Zinfandel, or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 large orange (navel or Valencia), sliced into rounds
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 to 4 star anise pods
  • ¼ cup honey or maple syrup (plus more to taste)
  • ¼ cup brandy or orange liqueur (optional)
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange thoroughly and slice into ¼-inch thick rounds. Optionally, stud each round with 3 to 4 whole cloves.
  2. Pour the entire bottle of red wine and ½ cup water into a 4 to 6 quart slow cooker.
  3. Add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, sliced ginger, honey or maple syrup, and brandy or orange liqueur (if using).
  4. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on Low for 2 to 3 hours or on High for 1 to 1.5 hours. Do not let it boil.
  6. After about 1 hour, taste and adjust sweetness or spice level as desired.
  7. Once hot and fragrant, switch slow cooker to ‘Warm’ setting until serving. Serve in mugs, garnishing each with an orange slice and cinnamon stick.

Notes

Do not boil the wine to avoid evaporating alcohol and bitter flavors. Taste halfway through to adjust sweetness. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute wine with red grape juice or pomegranate juice and reduce sweetener. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
