A hearty and flavorful chili made with sweet potatoes, ground turkey, and beans, slow-cooked to perfection. This set-it-and-forget-it recipe delivers comfort and warmth with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 3 cups diced), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream or Greek yogurt, sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, diced red onion, lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink (about 5-7 minutes). Use a slotted spoon to transfer the turkey to a 5-6 quart slow cooker.
  2. In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan, then transfer the onion and garlic to the slow cooker.
  3. Add the diced sweet potatoes directly to the slow cooker.
  4. Pour in the diced tomatoes (with juices), tomato sauce, and drained and rinsed kidney beans. Stir to combine.
  5. Add the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Pour in the chicken broth and stir until all spices are evenly distributed. The broth should just barely cover the ingredients; add another 1/4 cup broth or water if needed.
  6. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and the chili has thickened slightly.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (e.g., more salt, cumin, or a squeeze of lime juice).
  8. Ladle into bowls and serve with desired toppings.

Notes

For deeper flavor, reserve 1 teaspoon of chili powder and a pinch of cumin to stir in during the last 30 minutes of cooking. If chili is too thin, remove the lid during the last 30 minutes to let moisture evaporate, or mash some sweet potato cubes against the side of the slow cooker to thicken. Let chili rest on warm for 15-20 minutes before serving for best flavor.
