These Creamy Crockpot Mashed Potatoes are the ultimate stress-free side dish for holidays, potlucks, and big family dinners. With just 15 minutes of prep, the slow cooker does all the work, delivering rich, velvety mashed potatoes that stay warm for hours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • ½ cup warm milk or heavy cream (plus more as needed)

Instructions

  1. Prep the potatoes: Peel 5 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes and cut them into 1-inch chunks. Rinse the chunks in a colander with cold water to remove excess starch.
  2. Layer in the crockpot: Place the potato chunks in a 6 to 7-quart slow cooker. Scatter the cubed butter and cubed cream cheese over the top. Pour in 1 cup of low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 1 ½ teaspoons salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper.
  3. Cook on low: Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2.5 to 3 hours, until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  4. Mash the potatoes: Turn off the slow cooker or switch to ‘warm’. Use a potato masher or hand mixer to mash the potatoes right in the pot. Be careful not to over-mix.
  5. Adjust the consistency: Add ½ cup of warm milk or heavy cream and stir. Add more liquid if desired. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Keep warm until serving: Leave the mashed potatoes in the crockpot on the ‘warm’ setting for up to 2 hours. Stir in a splash of warm milk if they start to dry out.

Notes

For best results, use full-fat cream cheese and warm the milk before adding. Avoid over-mashing to prevent gluey texture. Potatoes can be prepared a day ahead and reheated with a splash of milk.
