The richest, creamiest, most perfectly pepperminty hot chocolate you’ll ever taste. Made in the slow cooker with simple ingredients, it’s the ultimate hands-off holiday drink that fills your home with the best smell.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped (60-70% cacao)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies (for garnish)
  • Mini marshmallows or whipped cream (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Combine the liquids: Pour the whole milk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk into your slow cooker. Whisk gently to combine.
  2. Add the extracts: Stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Don’t add all the peppermint at once; you can always add more later.
  3. Add the chocolate and cocoa: Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips, chopped dark chocolate, and sifted cocoa powder. Whisk everything together until the cocoa powder is mostly incorporated.
  4. Cook on low: Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 2 hours. Do not cook on high. After about 45 minutes, give it a good whisk to help everything melt evenly.
  5. Whisk again: After 2 hours, whisk the hot chocolate until it’s completely smooth and glossy. It should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon but still pourable. If too thick, whisk in a little extra milk.
  6. Taste and adjust: Take a small sip. If you want more peppermint, add another 1/4 teaspoon of extract and stir. If you want it sweeter, add a tablespoon of sugar or a drizzle of honey.
  7. Keep warm: Switch the crockpot to the WARM setting. It will stay perfectly drinkable for hours. If it thickens too much, stir in a splash of milk.
  8. Serve: Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream or mini marshmallows. Sprinkle crushed candy canes over the top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use good quality chocolate for best flavor. Don’t skip the dark chocolate—it balances sweetness. Start with 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract and adjust to taste. Keep on WARM setting after cooking to prevent scorching. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
