This rich, creamy crockpot hot chocolate is made with real chocolate and a hint of peppermint. It’s hands-off, perfect for holiday gatherings, and guaranteed to convert even the biggest hot chocolate skeptics.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Whipped cream (for serving)
  • Crushed peppermint candies (for serving)
  • Chocolate shavings (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Combine the liquids first. Pour the 6 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream into your crockpot. Add the entire can of sweetened condensed milk. Whisk gently until the condensed milk is mostly incorporated.
  2. Add the chocolate and flavorings. Sprinkle the 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips over the top. Add the 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon peppermint extract, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Don’t stir yet.
  3. Set it and forget it. Cover the crockpot with the lid. Cook on low for 2 hours or high for 1 hour. About halfway through, give it a good whisk to break up any clumps of chocolate.
  4. Whisk again before serving. After the cooking time, remove the lid and whisk vigorously for about 30 seconds until smooth and glossy.
  5. Taste and adjust. Add more peppermint extract or sweetened condensed milk if desired.
  6. Keep warm for serving. Turn the crockpot to the warm setting or keep it on low for up to 3 hours. Stir in a splash of milk if it thickens.
  7. Serve and garnish. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream, crushed peppermint candies, and chocolate shavings.

Notes

For best results, use whole milk and good-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips. Start with ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and adjust to taste. Cook on low for a creamier texture. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated gently.
