Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (Jif or Skippy recommended)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk (whole milk preferred)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1-2 drops black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, peanut butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides halfway through.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Use a 1.5-tablespoon cookie scoop to portion the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. You should get about 18-20 cookies.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes. The cookies should look set around the edges but still slightly soft in the center.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. The consistency should be thick but pipeable.
  10. Transfer the icing to a small piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Pipe a small circle of icing in the center of each cooled cookie. Then pipe 3-4 concentric circles around it, spaced about 1/4 inch apart. Immediately use a toothpick to drag from the center outward through all the circles, creating the web effect. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and egg. Do not substitute natural peanut butter as it can cause spreading. Cool cookies completely before decorating to prevent icing from melting. Work in batches of 3-4 cookies when creating the web design to ensure the icing doesn’t set before dragging.
