A visually striking and delicious charcuterie board arranged to resemble the American flag, perfect for patriotic celebrations like the Fourth of July. Easy to assemble with simple ingredients and customizable to suit dietary needs.

Ingredients

  • Fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Mini mozzarella balls or soft white cheese (burrata or fresh mozzarella)
  • Crisp white crackers or baguette slices (water crackers or artisan baguette)
  • Salami or thinly sliced cured meats
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Blue cheese crumbles or mild white cheese cut into star shapes (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs
  • Honey or fig jam
  • Mixed nuts (almonds or pecans)
  • Olives, preferably green (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients (10–15 minutes): Rinse all fresh fruit and herbs thoroughly. Slice strawberries and cherry tomatoes thinly but keep them sturdy enough to hold their shape. Drain mini mozzarella balls and pat dry. Slice salami into thin yet manageable pieces, roughly the size of crackers.
  2. Set Up the “Stripes” Base (10 minutes): Lay out the crackers or baguette slices in horizontal rows across the board. Alternate with rows of salami slices and cheese rounds or mozzarella balls to create the signature red and white stripes. Keep the spacing tight but not overcrowded to maintain a clear visual pattern.
  3. Create the Blue “Stars” Section (5 minutes): In one corner of the board (traditionally the top left), arrange fresh blueberries densely to mimic the star field. If using cheese stars, gently nestle them among the berries. Add a few small rosemary sprigs around this section to mimic the flag’s stripes and add a fresh aroma.
  4. Add Garnishes & Finishing Touches (5 minutes): Scatter mixed nuts and olives around the edges or between rows for texture and color contrast. Place small bowls of honey or fig jam nearby for guests to add sweetness as they please. Drizzle honey lightly over the cheese rounds for added flavor.
  5. Final Checks & Presentation (3 minutes): Ensure colors are vivid and the pattern is clear. Adjust any uneven rows or gaps. Serve at room temperature to maximize flavor from cheeses and meats.

Notes

Keep fruit and cheese separate until right before serving to avoid sogginess. Slice salami thinly but not paper-thin to maintain shape and moisture. Arrange fruit and veggies just before serving to keep colors fresh. Avoid overcrowding the board to maintain the flag pattern clarity. Rosemary sprigs add aroma but use sparingly to avoid overpowering cheeses. For gluten-free, substitute crackers with rice crackers or crisp veggie slices. For vegan or dairy-free, use vegan cheese and plant-based meats or marinated veggies.
