A simple, vibrant, and refreshingly sweet hibiscus tea drink perfect for Cinco de Mayo or any warm day. This agua fresca de jamaica balances tart floral flavors with a hint of citrus.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (15 grams) dried hibiscus flowers (jamaica)
  • 8 cups (1.9 liters) filtered water
  • ½ to ¾ cup (100150 grams) granulated sugar or sweetener of choice
  • Juice of 2 fresh limes (about 30 ml)
  • Optional: pinch of ground cinnamon or a few sprigs of fresh mint

Instructions

  1. Bring 8 cups (1.9 liters) of filtered water to a gentle boil in a large pot over medium-high heat (about 7–10 minutes).
  2. Remove water from heat, add 1 cup (15 grams) dried hibiscus flowers, cover, and steep for 15–20 minutes until water turns deep red.
  3. Strain the hibiscus infusion through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a pitcher, pressing gently to extract flavor.
  4. While warm, stir in ½ to ¾ cup (100-150 grams) granulated sugar or sweetener until fully dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  5. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour to chill.
  6. Just before serving, add juice of 2 fresh limes (about 30 ml) and stir gently to combine.
  7. Serve over ice in tall glasses, garnished with lime wedges or fresh mint if desired. Keep refrigerated up to 3 days.

Notes

Use fresh, quality dried hibiscus flowers for best flavor. Avoid oversteeping to prevent bitterness. Fresh lime juice is essential for brightness. Sweetness can be adjusted or substituted with honey, agave, stevia, or erythritol. Chill before serving for best refreshment. Optional additions include cinnamon, mint, fresh berries, or a splash of mezcal for an adult version.
