A simple and refreshing classic mint julep cocktail made with fresh bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice, perfect for summer gatherings and quiet evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 810 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or superfine sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) fresh bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve)
  • Crushed ice, enough to fill the glass
  • Optional: lemon twist or orange peel for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Heat over medium until sugar dissolves completely, about 2-3 minutes. Let it cool.
  2. Prepare your glass: Fill your julep cup or glass halfway with crushed ice to chill it. Set aside.
  3. Muddle the mint: Place 8-10 fresh mint leaves at the bottom of your mixing glass or shaker. Add 1 tablespoon of the cooled simple syrup. Gently press the leaves with a muddler or back of a spoon to release oils without tearing.
  4. Add bourbon: Pour 2 ounces (60 ml) of fresh bourbon into the mixing glass with the muddled mint and syrup.
  5. Mix the cocktail: Stir gently for about 10 seconds to blend flavors.
  6. Assemble the julep: Discard the ice from your chilled glass, then fill it completely with fresh crushed ice. Strain the bourbon mixture over the ice.
  7. Garnish and serve: Slap a sprig of fresh mint between your palms to release aroma and place it on top of the drink. Optionally, add a lemon twist.
  8. Enjoy immediately, sipping slowly to appreciate the evolving flavors.

Notes

Use fresh mint and quality bourbon for best flavor. Crush ice just before making the drink for authentic texture. Avoid over-muddling mint to prevent bitterness. Simple syrup can be made ahead and stored refrigerated for up to two weeks.
