These Spooky Easy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket are a fun and delicious Halloween appetizer made with mini sausages wrapped in pizza dough, baked until golden, and finished with mustard eyes. Perfect for parties, they’re quick, easy, and a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated pizza dough (Pillsbury Thin Crust preferred)
  • 24 mini smoked sausages or cocktail wieners (Hillshire Farm Lil’ Smokies recommended)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
  • Yellow mustard or ketchup (for eyes)
  • Small dots of black food coloring or black sesame seeds (for pupils, optional)
  • Ketchup (for dipping, optional)
  • Honey mustard (for dipping, optional)
  • Ranch dressing (for dipping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Unroll the refrigerated pizza dough onto a clean, lightly floured surface. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough lengthwise into thin strips—about 1/4 inch wide. You should get around 24 strips.
  3. Take one strip of dough and wrap it around a mini sausage, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Leave a small gap in the middle for the eyes—about 1/2 inch wide. Don’t wrap too tightly.
  4. Arrange the wrapped sausages on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one.
  5. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over the dough strips. If using, sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on now.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and puffed up.
  7. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Once cool enough to handle but still warm, pipe two small dots of mustard (or ketchup) in the gap you left. Use a toothpick to add a tiny dot of black food coloring or place a black sesame seed in the center of each mustard dot for the pupil.
  9. Serve immediately with dipping sauces on the side.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature dough. Leave a visible gap for the eyes. Don’t skip the egg wash. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pizza dough. For dairy-free, skip the egg wash and brush with olive oil. Mummies can be prepped a few hours ahead and refrigerated; add egg wash and bake just before serving. Eyes should always be added fresh after baking.
